THUNDER BAY – The timing may not be ideal, but Thunder Bay’s marquee recreational facility isn’t letting its 40th anniversary in 2021 go by without a celebration.

The city-owned Canada Games Complex will mark the occasion with discounts, giveaways, challenges, and – if possible – events.

“While this year might be a difficult time to celebrate due to the ongoing COVID-19 Pandemic, the recreation and culture division wants to recognize the importance of this facility, and its programs that play a vital role in our community,” read a report presented to city council Monday.

Council endorsed those plans, including a special promotional $40 monthly pass that will recognize not only the anniversary, but also the uncertainty of the pandemic.

“One month memberships may be more attractive during the pandemic when facilities are subject to limitations or closures, and potential members may be unwilling to commit to longer term memberships,” the report explained.

The city hopes the promotion will also help attract and retain new members.

The discounted passes will be available throughout 2021, and are limited to three per person during the year.

Regular adult monthly passes are set to increase to $69.36 in 2021, while discounted rates are offered for students, seniors, spouses, and youth.

The complex plans to offer a variety of ways to celebrate the anniversary both from home and in person, once allowed under provincial orders.

A t-shirt design contest will be launched in February for local children and youth, with submissions included in a 2022 calendar, and fitness incentives will be offered throughout the year, for example.

The Complex is the city’s largest recreational facility, attracting between 200,000 and 250,000 visitors a year.
