THUNDER BAY – City council on Monday is expected to vote on whether or not to reopen Churchill Pool this summer.

However, it will be September at the earliest before the Canada Games Complex and Volunteer Pools welcome swimmers back to the water.

According to a message delivered on Friday by the Games Complex, if approved, Churchill Pool will only be available to public who pre-book for lane swimming, family swims and group bookings. More details on how to book are expected after council votes, should it be approved.

With the risk of COVID-19 still in the community, the ability to safely reopen the other two facilities will require a formal review process.

They will only reopen once it’s safe for both customers and employees.

“In some cases, facilities require additional time after Council approves them to reopen, particularly aquatics facilities that require mandatory public health inspections after prolonged closures. In addition, multi-use facilities like the Canada Games Complex present other challenges for ensuring public safety with different types of spaces such as pools and fitness areas,” the letter reads.
