Canadian Forces launches scholarship

Canadian Forces units in Thunder Bay made a stop at Confederation College Thursday to announce a new scholarship program.

Former chief of defence staff Rick Hillier created the Project Hero program, which offers free tuition to dependants of fallen Canadian soldiers who were active in duty since 2002.

Confederation College becomes the third Ontario college to sign on to the program, which will be in effect until 2014. HMCS Griffon Capt. Anne Zuliani said the college has been a high quality educator of sailors, soldiers, airmen and airwomen.

Also recognized was the Armed Forces program, which provides electronics engineering technician students a salary, and reimburses students for tuition and books. One of the eight students, Allan Paterson, whose grandfather served in the Second World War, said he hopes to follow in his grandfather's footsteps.
