The next Municipal election will take place in November, but Monday was the first day for those wanting to run to file their nomination papers.

Thunder Bay's longest serving City Councillor put his name back in the hat. Lawrence Timko will run in the McKellar Ward.

He served on City Council from 1976 until 2006. The 72-year-old former councillor says there have not been a lot of Ward meetings and people need to have their say. He's also concerned about crime and what's happening in the Victoriaville area.

Longtime activist and CAW Union representative Paul Pugh has also added his name to the list of nominees in the McKellar Ward. For the past few years, Pugh has actively fought to secure jobs at the Bombardier plant.

The 62-year-old said there are a lot of issues, but job creation concerns him the most.

Coun. Robert Tuchenhagen, who now represents the McKellar Ward, said he will not run again in that ward.

Tuchenhagen said it is time for somebody younger to represent the Ward and said if he plans to run in the next election, it will be as an at-large candidate.

Others who have filed papers include Red River Ward Coun. Brian McKinnon, and Coun. Joe Virdiramo. Coun. Virdiramo will run again in the Westfort Ward.
