THUNDER BAY – A 61-year-old man has died as the result of a canoe capsizing on Manitouwadge Lake.

Ontario Provincial Police, in a release issued on Friday, said they received a report at about 2:10 p.m. on Thursday that a canoe had capsized.

Family members said the canoer was in the water and contacted others on the lake with Sea Doos, who went out on the water to investigate the situation. The man was found under the water and brought to shore.

CPR was performed until paramedics arrived, but the victim, identified as Paul Wielgosch, was pronounced dead shortly afterward.

Police ask anyone using a watercraft to follow all safety information available to them at www.boatingsafety.gc.ca.
