MARATHON, Ont. — One person suffered non life-threatening injuries when a car went down a steep hill by the Lake Superior shoreline on the weekend.
The incident occurred Saturday afternoon at the end of a street in Marathon that terminates at Pebble Beach.
Marathon Fire Chief Kent Readman said the outcome "could have been a lot worse."
Firefighters received a call for assistance while the fire service was holding an open house as part of Fire Prevention Week.
Superior North EMS paramedics were already on the scene when the rescue crew arrived, but one person was still in the vehicle at the bottom of the embankment near the water's edge.
"We used our rope rescue system to access the patient and bring the patient back up the bank and into EMS care, and they transported the patient" to hospital, Readman said.
The person's injuries did not appear serious, he said.
It's not clear yet what led up to the incident.
Large logs are in place in a parking area at the top of the embankment aimed at preventing this kind of occurrence.
In a Facebook post, the Marathon Fire Department said the incident is a good example of why the service carries a diverse array of equipment, and why firefighters are trained to handle multiple scenarios.
Ontario Provincial Police were called to the scene, but have not yet issued a statement.
