Police officers at an early morning RIDE spot check became suspicious of a driver who nearly struck a parked police cruiser.

Thunder Bay OPP officers set up the RIDE checkpoint just after 1 a.m. Thursday on Balsam Street. A woman driving a Ford Mustang approached the checkpoint and officers had to move out of the way as the driver almost struck the police cruiser.

Police say officers spoke to the driver, who showed signs of impairment.

Police eventually charged the 40-year-old Thunder Bay woman with driving while impaired by drugs.

Officers also charged the suspect with a number of other offences, however, police did not release the further details.

The suspect remains in custody pending a bail hearing Thursday.

Thunder Bay OPP says a number of RIDE spot checks were conducted around the city between Wednesday and Thursday.
