The COVID-19 case count in the Northwestern Health Unit continued a steep climb on Wednesday, as the agency reported 34 new infections.

Cases in the NWHU have nearly doubled in a week, rising from 115 on Dec. 22 to reach 220 on Wednesday.

By region, that included 77 in Kenora, 57 in Dryden, 35 in Sioux Lookout, 33 in Red Lake, 12 in Fort Frances, five in Emo, and one in Rainy River.

No cases were reported in the Atikokan area, where only 21 cases of COVID-19 have been reported since the pandemic began.

Four NWHU residents were in hospital with the virus, unchanged from the previous day.

The sharp increase in cases comes after the first cases of the Omicron variant were reported in the NWHU on Dec. 22
