SIOUX LOOKOUT, Ont. – The number of active COVID-19 cases remained in the single digits in the Northwestern Health Unit Friday, as the agency reported a single new confirmed case.

That came in its Sioux Lookout region, the second recorded there in the past week.

Of the eight active cases, three were in the NWHU’s Kenora region, with two each in the Rainy River and Sioux Lookout regions, and one in the Dryden/Red Lake region.

One active case is currently outside of its catchment area, the health unit noted.

The agency recently moved back to reporting cases by those four massive regions, rather than more detailed geographic information it had been providing on new cases by health hub.

The change was necessary to protect patients’ privacy due to low case counts, the NWHU said.

Two NWHU residents were in hospital with the virus as of Friday.

The health unit’s testing positivity rate sat at 0.59 per cent on 1,186 tests completed for the most recent week of data, June 7 to 13.

The NWHU reported 77,953 vaccine doses had been administered to its estimated population of 82,231.

The health unit is still not providing data on vaccination numbers for those aged 12 to 17.

Of residents 18 and older, however, 71.1 per cent had received at least a first dose, while 34.9 per cent were fully vaccinated with two doses.

The health unit has reported a total of 1,075 confirmed COVID-19 cases since the pandemic began. Of those, 1,067 were considered resolved, which includes seven deaths in which the virus was an underlying or contributing cause.
