THUNDER BAY -- Thunder Bay Fire Rescue crews rescued a cat sheltering inside a vacant Limbrick Street residence that was engulfed in flames when they arrived on scene early Saturday morning.

According to a release issued by the fire department, first arriving crews were called to the scene at about 3 a.m. and encountered a fully involved fire, with flames flickering through the windows.

Multiple attack lines were deployed and large volumes of water were applied on the row house residence's exterior, until it was safe to enter.

While continuing to fight the fire, firefighters swept in the inside of the home, looking for occupants. None were found and it was later confirmed the residence was vacant.

It was during the search the stray cat was found. It was subsequently treated for smoke inhalation by firefighters and is expected to recover.

Damage to the unit was substantial, but the quick action of firefighters prevented the fire from spreading to other units.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

TBFR was alerted to the fire thanks to several calls from concerned neighbours.
