Cattle truck overturns on Highway 17

OPP say 24-year-old driver taken to hospital and later released.

THUNDER BAY – An overturned cattle truck led to the temporary closure Saturday of a section of Highway 17 just west of the Pic River Bridge.

Ontario Provincial Police say an east-bound tractor trailer failed to negotiate a corner on the highway and left the roadway, tipping into the south ditch.

As a result some of the cattle escaped the trailer and had to be gathered up to be loaded into a second tractor trailer.

Several emergency service crews attended the scene to assist.

The truck’s driver, a 24-year-old male from Brownlee, Sask., was taken to hospital for treatment of minor injuries and subsequently released.

Motorists were asked to use caution and expect delays.

Police also reminded the public that the cattle is the property of the insurance company and any removal of the animals is prohibited and considered theft until the scene is released.
