THUNDER BAY – The Thunder Bay Community Economic Development Commission has given Confederation College $500,000 to help create its Technology, Education and Collaboration Hub.
Doug Murray, CEO of the CEDC, made the announcement on Friday.
The CEDC was happy to approve $500,000 in spending for the Confederation College TEC Hub because it will contribute to the development of a skilled, employment ready technology and trades workforce for Northwestern Ontario,” Murray said in a joint release with the college.
The $19-million Hub, announced last year, will form on three main clusters: Industry skills and sustainability instruction; advanced manufacturing technology and innovation and incubation.
College president Jim Madder welcomed the donation with open arms.
“The Thunder Bay CEDC is a longstanding and valued partner of Confederation College and we are incredibly grateful for their significant contribution towards this project. Our TEC Hub will enable us to reach more students and further prepare them with the training needed to meet the growing demand for skilled workers in our region,” Madder said.
“These dollars demonstrate the CEDC’s commitment to advancing education and innovation in our community and Northwestern Ontario.”
Both the federal and provincial government have already invested in the project, which has also received funding from the college itself.
It’s scheduled to open next spring, with a groundbreaking ceremony planned for later this month.
