THUNDER BAY — Revenue from the city's Municipal Accommodation Tax is being used to support the StrEATery, the seasonal program overseen by the Waterfront District Business Improvement Area in the downtown north core.
The Community Economic Development Commission and Tourism Thunder Bay administer 50 per cent of the proceeds of the four per cent accommodation tax collected on short-term stays at local hotels and motels.
This summer, $41,500 from the CEDC's tourism development fund was provided to the StrEATery.
Its key features include outdoor seating and planters which are designed to encourage more people to visit the downtown area.
Waterfront BIA board spokesperson Peter White said the partnership is critical for the revitalization, growth and productivity of the waterfront district.
"The associated boost in terms of beautification, cultural celebration and marketing benefits all who visit, live, work, eat and play here," White said.
Tourism Thunder Bay Manager Paul Pepe said the waterfront area has evolved to become a major destination for residents and visitors alike.
"We are pleased to support this project with leveraged investmet to further the BIA's leadership and their members' vision and commitment to making Thunder Bay a better destination for visitors to explore and stay," Pepe added.
