THUNDER BAY -- Hundreds of motorists drive by it every day, but to most Thunder Bay residents a natural environment garden in the middle of the city remains a hidden "greenspace gem."

That may be about to change, as EcoSuperior has announced plans for a significant upgrading at the Central Natural Environment Gardens located on Central Avenue just west of Balmoral Street.

EcoSuperior and the City of Thunder Bay Parks Department have been collaborating on the site since 1995. The former roadbed was left vacant when Central Avenue was diverted.

It currently includes interpretive gardens filled with wildflowers, a shed with a "living roof," a human sundial and a solar-powered water pump.

Work is just beginning on a post-and-beam, 16 X 24-foot shelter for participants in activities at the gardens.

EcoSuperior executive-director Ellen Mortfield says the shelter will provide welcome shade and seating for a summer day camp as well as for community workshops and seminars the organization has planned.

The structure is being built entirely by volunteers, with a major contribution from the family of the late Dan Saunders.

"My Grandpa was a lifelong educator who always made the time to help people and share the wide range of skills he acquired in his years as a carpenter, air frame mechanic and estimator," said Jamie Saunders.

He said his grandfather settled into a career as technical director and eventually vice-principal at Thunder Bay's former Gron Morgan vocational high school. "His focus was always on the practical, hands-on side of learning and he had a knack and patience for instruction that is a rare gift," Saunders added.

In addition al the gazebo, a nature playground will be constructed at the site this summer, using logs, boulders and other natural materials.

Additional support is being provided by TD Friends of the Environment Foundation, Wanson Lumber, Open Mind Interiors, Copperfin Credit Union and Unitized Manufacturing.
