THUNDER BAY -- A major east-west route in Thunder Bay is about to be partially shut down temporarily for asphalt resurfacing work to take place.

City officials on Wednesday said the project will begin on Thursday at 7 p.m. on Central Avenue, between Balmoral Street and Memorial Avenue.

The plan is to complete the work in two phases. In Phase 1, eastbound traffic lanes will be closed and only westbound traffic will be permitted. In Phase 2, the westbournd lanes will be closed and only vehicles travelling east will be allowed.

The work is expected to take four to five days to complete.

The work will also impact traffic at the intersections of Balmoral Street and Central Avenue and Memorial and Central avenues, in order to allow equipment to safely be moved into the construction zone. At the start of each night the intersection at Balmoral and Central will be closed, while at the end of each night's work, the other intersection will be closed, but both closures will be short in duration.

Motorists and pedestrians are asked to use extra caution and obey all posted signage when travelling near the construction area.
