The emergency department at the region’s hospital will be losing six of its doctors in the coming months.

The department has already seen three doctors leave -- two due to retirement -- in the past year. These six new departures are expected to put extra pressure on an already short-staffed department, but officials with the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre say they can manage.

In the meantime the hospital is asking the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care for relief staff until the shortage is resolved.

Department officials say they've face this problem before, and they will help to compensate by working extra shifts.

Department heads also point out that doctors who have recently finished their residency will be joining the team

Department heads said that ideally they would like to see up to 10 new doctors join the emergency department team.
