SHUNIAH -- The fire service in Shuniah Township says it expects to lay charges after a weekend fire in the community east of Thunder Bay.

Firefighters were dispatched on Sunday afternoon to deal with a structural fire in the 100 Block of Amethyst Harbour Road.

Ontario Provincial Police had called in the alarm after officers spotted heavy black smoke from several kilometres away.

The fire crew arrived to find a shed on fire and some piles of brush close to the tree line on the property.

They were able to knock down the flames quickly, preventing the fire from spreading to the bush.

Shuniah Fire and Emergency Services notes that a permit is required for all open-air burning in the township, and that daytime burning restrictions are in effect from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. between April 1 and October 31.

Regulations also require that adequate fire suppression equipment is on hand.
