Children's bikes offered for free

A selection of working bikes, some like new, can be viewed online prior to arranging for pickup at Thunder Bay's landfill site

THUNDER BAY — Just in time for summer, the City of Thunder Bay Second Spin Bike Reuse Program has been launched at the landfill and recycling facility on Mapleward Road.

The program, inaugurated last summer, provides a selection of used children's bikes that have been dropped off by their previous owners.

There is no charge.

City staff visually inspect the bikes when they are brought in to ensure their functionality.

While some are in like-new condition, others may have small issues.

Wendy O'Connor, a communications officer with the city, said Tuesday that 34 bikes are currently available.

They can all be viewed online, but a pre-scheduled appointment is required to pick up a bicycle.

That can only be arranged by filling out a form.

Upon arrival at the landfill site's administration building, a waiver form agreement must be signed by an adult (18 or older) in order to obtain the bike.

O'Connor said that last year 74 children's and youth's bicycles were distributed through the program.

Bikes for adults are recycled through Bicycles for Humanity.
