The ride is over for Chippewa Park’s carousel -- at least until next year.
The city closed the decades old amusement ride for maintenance. The carousel shaft is being repaired after it failed earlier in the month.
Iain Angus, secretary for the Friends of Chippewa Park, said it will take a long time to disassemble, repair and reassemble. Because of the lengthy process, Angus in an email said it wouldn’t be possible to keep the ride open for the rest of the season without it impact other parts.
“The carousel will indeed return next season,” Angus states in his email to tbnewswatch.com.
“Later this fall, the Friends of Chippewa Park will be preparing grant applications that if funded will see the historic carousel refurbished and housed in its own building.”
The Fort William Parks Board purchased the carousel from Maude King of Fort Erie, Ont., in June, 1934 for $583.33. The purchase was made after King’s traveling carnival went into bankruptcy while operating at Chippewa Park.
