Rotary House Lottery organizers are erring on the side of caution this year as they select what community groups will be on the receiving end of the 26th annual charity project.

“We have some commitments we have to catch up on from previous years,” said House Lottery chairman Bob Hookham.

One guarantee is $25,000 for St. Joseph Care Group’s hospice renovation plans. Hookham said they also hope to help fund some youth suicide prevention programs, but for now they are going to wait and see while the applications come in.

“There’s just not enough to go around out there and with the province cutting back everything they have to do just to meet budget, it’s important for the community to chip in and look after itself and we’re one of the vehicles that can help do that,” Hookham said.

This year’s house is located right next door to last year’s lottery house at 520 Fireweed Bay in the growing Sherwood Estates neighbourhood.

The three-bedroom house is about 1,600 square feet with an open concept family room and kitchen area and a main-floor laundry set up. The basement is unfinished and the house is equipped with energy-efficient appliances, including a furnace, air conditioning and central vac.

“It makes for a great family home, close to the schools and all amenities and that. I think that helps sell tickets,” said Hookham.
While the house is the grand prize, there are 10 early bird prizes of $5,000 each. The first early bird draw is April 18.

The grand prize draw will take place on July 1.
