Christmas tree drop-off sites open

The city is offering nine locations across Thunder Bay for residents to drop off their Christmas Trees to be composted by Jan. 12.
Christmas Tree Drop-Off

THUNDER BAY – Residents have just over a week to leave their Christmas trees at one of the City of Thunder Bay’s nine drop-off locations.

The last day to take advantage of the free drop-off program is Jan. 12.

The trees are collected chipped, and added to the compost pile at the municipal landfill. In the spring, when the compost is mature, it’s offered to residents free of charge.

“A major benefit of a natural Christmas tree is that it’s easy to recycle,” said Jason Sherband, the city’s manager of solid waste and recycling services.

Residents are asked to ensure all ornaments and tinsel have been removed from trees before they are dropped off. If a plastic bag is used to transport the tree to the recycling site, it also must be removed.

Trees cannot be left at recycling depots or put out for curbside collection.

For more information, residents can call the city’s dispatch line at 625-2195 or visit thunderbay.ca/christmas
