THUNDER BAY – The city is looking at a possible realignment of the Waterfront Trail bridge that is planned to cross several sets of railway tracks which serve the Richardson grain terminal.

Kayla Dixon, director, engineering and operations, said those tracks are a barrier to continuing the waterfront trail from its current location to the McDougall lookout.

“We're looking to make sure that we have a safe crossing for the users. Whether we are continuing to go through the Richardson property to try and have minimal impact to their operations, or else we have to look at some other realignment options so that we can get the trail up to Fisherman's Park,” she said.

“But it's also something that's going to get us to the terminus, which would be great to have users be able to connect into Fisherman's Park and then all the way up through the Boulevard and Trowbridge Trails.”

The city currently has a consultant looking at the realignment options, which will be presented to Richardson grain terminal to see if there is a solution that can be worked out. The alignment will then be brought to council if there's any changes.

“This is kind of a longer-term item because we will still be looking for funding,” Dixon said.

“But right now, we're just looking for an alignment that will make sense so that we can start that process. We are looking to have probably something from the consultant in about six weeks or so, at which time we'll go and talk to Richardson.”
