City council get a look at salaries, expenses Monday night

THUNDER BAY -- The salaries and expenses for city council have been released for a second time. The 2015 numbers were first delivered two weeks ago, but have now been updated after some errors were discovered.

THUNDER BAY -- The salaries and expenses for city council have been released for a second time. The 2015 numbers were first delivered two weeks ago, but have now been updated after some errors were discovered.

The mayor and 12 councillors cost the city more than $573,000 in salaries and expenses. The highest paid member of city council in 2015 was mayor Keith Hobbs, at just under $92,000 for his work as mayor and spent just under $9,000 on expenses.

The second highest earner is Westfort Coun. Joe Virdiramo, earning just under $40,000 and more than $9,000 in expenses. Finance chair and at-Large Coun. Frank Pullia earned more than $40,000 and spent just over $7,500 in expenses. Iain Angus is the city's fourth highest compensated councillor, earning just under $39,000 and spending more than $2,600on expenses.'

Northwood Coun. Shelby Ch'ng took home just over $39,000, spending a little more than $1,900 in expenses. At-large Coun. Aldo Ruberto rounded out the top earners, with just over $40,000 in salary and $153 in expenses.

Ruberto's expenses were not the lowest in town as McKellar Coun. Paul Pugh earned around $39,000 but spent just $35.

Red River Coun. Brian McKinnon earned just under $36,000 with around $3,600 in expenses. McIntyre's Trevor Giertuga and Neebing Ward's Linda Rydholm both took home $35,400, but Giertuga spent more than $2,100 in expenses compared to Rydholm's $1,400.

Coun. Larry Hebert earned $33,000, spending $956 on expenses. Coun. Rebecca Johnson earned $30,000 , spending less than $2,000on expenses.

Last year's lowest paid Coun. Andrew Foulds earned $31,000, spending $360 on expenses. Foulds took a leave of absence during the federal election, to run as a New Democratic candidate in Thunder Bay-Superior North and did not collect a salary during that leave.

All councillors receive a base salary but may receive more money through sitting on boards like the Police Services or Thunder Bay Hydro. The report on councillor's salaries and expenses will be going before city council for review on Monday evening.
