THUNDER BAY – Thunder Bay Coun. Cody Fraser is bringing a motion to council requesting a report on a potential decrease to speed limits on Arthur Street to create a safer environment for Thunder Bay residents who live along the former highway.
“The Arthur Street corridor is 80 kilometres per hour, and it’s been 80 kilometres per hour since when it was a highway, which would have been about 15 or 20 years ago," said Fraser.
“The motion's intention is to at least take a look at the possibility of a speed reduction, a gradual speed reduction, any kind of traffic-calming measures. Any kind of decision that would be made, of course, would be made in consultation with the community.”
Fraser expects some pushback from residents who commute along Arthur Street, but is confident that they will be able to get to at least the report stage so that they can see what options are available to the community.
Another motion from city council will see the installation of 40 kilometre-per-hour speed limit zones on Lillie Street from Walnut Street to Victoria Avenue and on River Street from Court Street to Cumberland Street.
Both motions will be brought before council on Monday.
