THUNDER BAY – Of the 559 municipal employees on the 2020 Sunshine List, Police Chief Sylvie Hauth tops them all.
Hauth, according to the latest Ontario public sector salary disclosure list, release on Friday afternoon by the province, earned $265,822 last year, $63 more than the $265,759 earned by city manager Norm Gale.
Hauth’s deputy chief, Ryan Hughes, was third on the City of Thunder Bay list, taking home $242,244.
Fire Chief Greg Hankkio, hired part way through the year, earned $200,434.
Last year, the city had 452 employees on the Sunshine List, which discloses salaries of provincial and municipal employees who earn $100,000 or more.
Big money was also made at a number of other publicly funded provincial organizations, including Lakehead University, Confederation College, the Thunder Bay District Health Unit, and both Lakehead Public Schools and the Thunder Bay Catholic District School Board.
Lakehead University president Moira McPherson earned $360,046, one of 16 employees at the school to take home more than $200,000 last year.
All told, 379 university employees made $100,000 or more in 2020.
McPherson’s Confederation College counterpart, Kathleen Lynch, made $234,854 last year, one of 130 school employees to make the so-called Sunshine List.
At the Thunder Bay Catholic District School Board, director of education Pino Tassone topped the list, earning $223,541. All told, 357 board employees made $100,000 or more last year. At Lakehead Public Schools, director of education Ian MacRae was one of 99 employees who earned more than $100,000 in 2020. He led all board employees with $196,722.
At the Thunder Bay District Health Unit, managing the local pandemic effort paid off for Dr. Janet DeMille. The medical officer of health earned $354,707, one of 24 staffers to top the $100,000 mark.
Retired president and CEO Jean Bartkowiak earned $367,500 in 2020 to lead all employees at Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre, where three others broke the $300,000 barrier and 338 employees in total were on the Sunshine list.
Pyschiatrist John Haggarty was the leading money earner at St. Joseph’s Care Group, with a salary totalling $395,374, while outgoing president and CEO Tracy Buckler earned $343,080, fifth on the hospital’s list.
One-hundred-and-twenty-three employees had their salaries disclosed.
Finally, three regional MPPs were on the list, led by Minister of Energy, Northern Development and Mines and Minister of Indigenous Affairs Greg Rickford, who took home $165,851. Liberal Thunder Bay-Superior North MPP Michael Gravelle earned $128,205, while the NDP’s Judith Monteith-Farrell (Thunder Bay-Atikokan) made $116,550.
