THUNDER BAY – The City of Thunder Bay has issued a ban on all outdoor fires within city limits.

The move coincides with the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry's province-wide restricted fire zone that encompasses all of Northern Ontario.

All outdoor burning permits have been suspended for the duration of the ban and that anyone caught not observing the ban will face prosecution and significant fines.

The move was made in conjunction with COVID-19 efforts, to potentially free up resources that might be needed elswhere as the pandemic progresses.

Shuniah has also enacted a fire ban within the township's limits, suspending all open fire permits and outlawing fireworks.

The ban means no campfires, grass burning or burn barrels, and, if you don't legally own or occupy a property, no charcoal barbecues, wood-burning stoves or furnaces.

A portable gas stove is allowed, but it must be at least a metre away from flammable material.

Disobeying the provincial ban could result in fines of up to $25,000, three months in jail and financial responsibility for any costs incurred fighting a forest fire.
