THUNDER BAY — The City of Thunder Bay has announced a new online registration system for recreation programs and facilities.

Residents are able to create their own accounts to search, register and pay for upcoming programs and memberships online.

The system uses new software in place of the previous version which had become obsolete.

Andrea Morrison, the manager of Central Support Services, said it's considerably more user-friendly than the old system.

"There will be things that people can self-serve, so that rather than having to call or go in person, they'll be able to look at program schedules, purchase memberships and different things like that. Before it was a registration hot-line or in-person registration," she explained in an interview Wednesday.

City facilities and programs are currently shut down because of COVID-19, however registration for summer 55 Plus programs will open on May 26, while all other Recreation & Culture programs including children and youth, and aquatics, will open on May 31.

Programs are subject to change due to COVID-19 and the status of provincial or regional reopening guidelines.

There is no in-person registration, but information on setting up an online account is available by calling 625-8463 or visiting www.thunderbay.ca/register.

Programs are listed on the registration webpage as well as in the summer edition of The Key magazine at www.thunderbay.ca/thekey
