THUNDER BAY -- City Parks officials continue to look for new homes for the animals at the Chippewa Wildlife Exhibit.

City Council voted on Monday to shut down the tourist attraction, after nearly three decades in operation.

The exhibit at Chippewa is currently home to 23 animals.

Acting Parks Manager Gordon John says the operation will be officially closed on May 1 of this year.

He's now talking with caretakers from other wildlife exhibits to see about transferring the animals and John said city staff will continue looking after the animals if need be, even after the closing date in May.

“Today, I’ve received a lot of calls and inquiries about people wanting to help out,” John said.

“Right now, we are actively searching all the best possible avenues that we have to find new homes for all our animals.”

John added that they will be taking care of those animals until homes are found, and if some of them can’t move they will be taking care of them until they pass on naturally.

More than 800 people came to see the animals this past weekend, and sign the petition to try to keep the exhibit open, but that won't be the public's last chance to see them.

The Wildlife Exhibit will be open again, during the March Break.
