City looking into options for non-profits with zoning applications

The city will be looking into options for non-profits looking to make zoning amendments.

Coun. Aldo Ruberto wants the city to reconsider charging fees, which can be over $2,000, for non-profits making zoning amendment applications.

“I think it would be very fair to the organizations out there that provide a service to our community,” Ruberto said Monday night.

But while councillors want to see the report, due back in February, some are worried that organizations might take advantage of the city should it start waiving fees. Others like Coun. Trevor Giertuga said he needs to know where the city would make up the lost revenue.

“I don’t want this to fall on the backs of the taxpayer,” Giertuga said.

The issue was raised by Ruberto last month when Evergreen A United Neighbourhood asked that the city reimburse its application fee of over $1,800 for the former Hells Angels clubhouse.
