City looks for consultant on accessibility plan

Audit will include 15 municipal facilities
City Hall

THUNDER BAY -- The City of Thunder Bay is searching for a consultant to conduct an audit of municipal services and facilities and develop a new five-year accessibility plan.

It's to ensure the city complies with the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act and the province's Integrated Accessibility Standards Regulation.

A notice to potential bidders for the project states that the purpose of the plan "is to remove barriers to service and provide barrier free access for both patrons and staff to public facilities owned and operated by the city."

The city's first accessibility plan was approved in 2003, and the most recent update was approved in 2012. It expires this year.

The request for proposals provides a list of municipal facilities that will be included in the audit:

  • City Hall
  • Victoriaville Civic centre
  • Volunteer Pool
  • Widnall Pool
  • Current River Arena
  • Delaney Arena
  • Grandview Arena
  • Neebing Arena
  • Port Arthur Arena
  • Canada Games Complex
  • Current River Community Centre
  • North McIntyre Community Centre
  • West Arthur Community Centre
  • West Thunder Community Centre
  • Thunder Bay 55 Plus Centre

The consulting firm that gets the job will be expected to develop a detailed work plan including costing and staffing, and to prioritize the projects.

The report must also include an accessible design standard for both conventional and specialized transit stops, with recommendations to identify, remove and prevent barriers to accessibility.

May 2, 2018 is the targeted completion date.
