The city is about to take a good look at what will what businesses it should and should not be in.
City manager Tim Commisso met with seven of nine unions representing municipal employees Thursday to discuss the city’s upcoming plans for corporate review. That review includes the City Lean project. A step in the cost-saving plans is looking at city-run businesses.
“As we move forward and we’re looking at ways to find dollars we have to look at what businesses we’re in,” Commisso said Thursday morning.
But he wouldn’t comment on what businesses will be looked at or what the recommendations will be because a report will come to council at the end of the month.
The process of the City Lean, which Commisso hopes will save the city $500,000, was also outlined for union representatives.
That program is all about delivering better service at less cost, he said. And it requires the involvement of frontline staff in order to make it work.
“I think everybody understands that you have to actually go through the process you have to get engaged in it to really speak about it,” he said.
Staffing was not discussed. Commisso said if the program did identify cuts there, it would be a separate issue that requires decisions from council.
“If there’s opportunities to provide services with less resources we’ll identify that but that’s a process that I said to all of them this morning that we’ll be up front about it. We’ll bring those forward and we’ll talk about it,” he said.
