THUNDER BAY – The City of Thunder Bay has named Karen Lewis as its general manager of its development and emergency services department.

A 27-year-veteran with the municipality, Lewis has spent the past several years as the director of corporate strategic services, which includes overseeing communications and strategic initiatives, like crime prevention and the drug control strategy.

Lewis has also been an integral part of the Thunder Bay Emergency Operations Control Group.

"I’m very pleased that Karen has accepted the position,” said city manager Norm Gale, in a release issued on Monday by the city.

"I look forward to the vision, passion and experience she will bring to the position. She will continue to be an asset to the city’s executive leadership team.”

The development and emergency services departments focuses on health, safety and development initiatives that attract investors to the community.

It also runs regulatory functions that maintain quality of life and help make the community attractive to residents, potential investors and visitors.

Lewis, who served in the not-for-profit sector before taking a job with the city in 1994, will begin her new role on April 12. She takes over the position from Mark Smith, who has retired.
