THUNDER BAY -- Motorists and pedestrians can expect some disruptions over the next several months as City of Thunder Bay workers and private contractors begin the road construction season.

The city has budgeted $34.7 million this year for road and sidewalk rehabilitation, residential paving, sanitary and storm sewer and watermain repair/replacement, bridge and culvert work, and streetlight renewal.

Some of the work requires the shutting down of major traffic arteries.

Central Avenue is scheduled for closure between Golf Links Road and Amber Drive for five weeks due to the installation of a new trunk watermain.

Court Street will be closed between John Street and Bay Street for watermain and sewer work as well as resurfacing and the addition of separated bike lanes. The project will be finished at the end of July.

The replacement of the High Street retaining wall next month will force the closure of High between John Street and Bay Street.

Road rehabilitation has begun on Cumberland Street between Gibson Street and the Current River Bridge, restricting traffic to one lane in each direction.

Information about all the projects in the various city neighbourhoods is available on the City of Thunder Bay website.
