THUNDER BAY – The City of Thunder Bay is offering free compost to residents, while quantities last.

According to release issued on Tuesday by the city, the free compost area is located on John Street Road, between Mapleward and Gratton Roads, open from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Monday to Friday and from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Saturday.

“Our compost is composed of leaf and yard waste that’s picked up during our curbside collection programs, which is blended with organic waste collected on-site,” said Jason Sherband, manager of solid waste and recycling services.

“The compost is great for landscaping, but is not suitable for fruit and vegetable gardens.”

Those using the compost service are asked to bring any garbage, recycling and household waste to the John Street landfill first before visiting the compost area.

Residents are also reminded to bring a shovel and either bags or containers to carry compost away. There is a half-ton load limit per person.
