Free compost is being made available to the public at the city’s solid waste and recycling facility.
The pick-up area is located just east of the old landfill entrance on John Street Road and the compost will be available from Monday to Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The compost can be used for landscaping, flowerbeds and lawns, but is not to be used for vegetable gardens.
“All the leaves and organic garden waste dropped off at the compost lay-down area at the landfill have been blended with organic waste collected during the special spring and fall curb-side pick-ups,” said Jason Sherband, co-ordinator of solid waste diversion and recycling – roads division in a release issued Wednesday morning.
“The result is high quality, well-aged and screened compost available to city residents at no charge.”
Quantities are limited to one half-tonne load per resident, who are advised to bring a shovel and bags or containers to carry the compost home. People are asked to drop off all garbage and recyclables before proceeding to the compost pick-up area.
