City police issue more than 50 tickets to drivers ignoring road closure signs

Thunder Bay Police issued more than 50 tickets to drivers ignoring road closure signs on Arundel Street over the weekend.

Thunder Bay Police issued more than 50 tickets to drivers ignoring road closure signs on Arundel Street over the weekend.

A gravel portion of the road under Arundel Street between Toledo Street and Lyon Boulevard was washed out after last weekend’s rain, leaving only the asphalt covering the top of the road.

“This is very dangerous as a vehicle could have broken through the asphalt and fallen several feet, likely severely injuring or killing the driver and occupants,” police stated in a media release.

After receiving reports about drivers not obeying the signs, traffic officers went to the location and issued more than 50 fines for driving on a closed highway.

Officers found people went either through or over the barricades, moved them to drive through or squeezed by on the edge of the roadway.

“It would seem to be common sense that if the road is closed with barricades you should not move them, drive over them or go around them but it appears that this logic is missing on many people. There were so many offenders that we could not write tickets to everyone and many turned around and left,” the release states.

Police are also reminding drivers that speeding fines are doubled in construction zones when workers are present. Eight drivers were ticketed in the Golf Links Road construction area.

Enforcement will be continuing.
