City police seek public's help with sudden death investigation

Police say it’s still too early to determine whether or not foul play was involved.

THUNDER BAY – City police are making another appeal for information from the public as the investigation into a weekend death continues.

On Tuesday, Thunder Bay Police Service Det. John Fennell spoke with media personnel outside the Thunder Bay Police Service to make another public appeal for information.

Police were called to the 300-block of Court Street South after a passerby came across a body on Saturday, Feb. 29 at 9:45 a.m. When officers arrived, they confirmed the person was deceased. The investigation has now been taken over by the Major Crimes Unit as they investigate the circumstances around the death.

Police are not releasing the victim's identity, according to a police news release and are looking to speak with witnesses who may have seen a single female walking in the area.

“We are asking or hoping for any information the public would be able to offer about a female who would have been walking down the street on Friday night,” Fennell said. “That would have been Court Street between Fort William Road and John Street.”

Police say the woman would have likely been alone. Anyone who may have observed the woman in the area between 11 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 28, and 9 a.m. the next day, Feb. 29, is asked to contact police.

“We would be very appreciative of learning of any information of observations anybody made in that area,” Fennell said, adding it’s still too early to tell if foul play was involved.

Anyone with information is asked to contact investigators by calling 684-1200 or can submit anonymously through Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
