THUNDER BAY -- It's the week to celebrate youth in the city.

May 1 to 7 was proclaimed as Youth Week at city hall Thursday and the city's children and youth program supervisor Kim Baskin said it's a chance for youth to try something new.

"It showcases their talents, their creativity, just what makes youth so important for the city of Thunder Bay," she said.

For this year's weeklong celebration, youth are encouraged to try something new and the city is hosting a variety of activities from recreational opportunities like boxing, archery and rock climbing to artistic projects like Panamanian street dancing.

Die Active Art Collective is hosting a Graffiti Bike Tour on May 3 to explore the graffiti walls in the city.

Baskin said the most important message they hope the youth receive this week is how powerful they are for the future of the city.

"How important they are and the role they play in our society, giving them the tools they need to pursue their dreams," she said.

Westgate Collegiate and Vocational Institute student Daniel Voss, 15, said he thinks youth week is a cool idea and a great event to get youth involved in the community, which he believes is important because youth are the future.

"In a few years, they'll be the ones deciding what happens in our city, what happens in our community," he said.
