City releases details of SnowDay on the Waterfront

Family Day event includes Recreation and art activities

THUNDER BAY -- Organizers and participants will be hoping for favourable weather when SnowDay on the Waterfront takes place in Thunder Bay on Monday, February 19, which is Family Day in Ontario..

The city released details of the annual Marina Park event at a media conference Tuesday.

SnowDay has been named one of the province's top festivals by Festivals and Events Ontario.

Highlights of this year's event include: 

  • snow carving with Willow Springs Creative Centre
  • Birds of the Bay Community Art Installations
  • winter science with Science North
  • ice fishing with Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters
  • Snow Much Fun with the Children and Youth section
  • face painting by Our Kids Count
  • snowshoeing with Chaltrek
  • Waterfront Yarn Barn project
  • Sensory Mindfulness Scavenger Hunt with Roots and Branches Forest School
  • pottery and quilt-making demonstrations in the Baggage Building Arts Centre
  • kicksledding

Ash Young, the city's cultural development and events supervisor, said the snow sculptures are at the heart of the festival.

"This year, we're pleased to have nine teams carving all weekend in the festival area. Each team brings a unique vision of this year's theme, Pop Culture," Young said.

SnowDay activities are free, and will take place between noon and 5:00 p.m. 

Food and beverages will be available onsite, including a chili cook-off by the Regional Food Distribution Association, involving chili from local restaurants.
