THUNDER BAY – According to Moneysense magazine, Thunder Bay is on the rise.
But don’t get too excited.
The publication ranked the Northwestern Ontario city 86th on its annual list of best places to live in Canada, an upgrade of 26 spots over its 2015 ranking.
The report gives Thunder Bay check marks for access to health care and low taxes, saying the average property tax bill was just $2,041.
According to the magazine the median household income was $71,221, with discretionary income of $41,322,
The report also says the crime rate has dropped 30 per cent over the past five years.
Kenora was the top Northwestern Ontario community of the 219 listed, coming in at 72. That’s a drop of 33 from a year earlier.
Ottawa topped the list, taking the title from 2015 champion, Boucherville, Que.
The magazine said it based its rankings, released on June 8, on 35 different categories, with demographics and wealth/income representing the biggest single factors. Weather, commute time to and from work, housing affordability, crime, taxation and culture also factored into the list.
