In a rare assignment for this time of year, City of Thunder Bay road crews are being dispatched to deal with water that's pooling on streets in various parts of the city.

The warm weather has melted accumulated snow but the resulting water is backing up behind storm sewer catch-basins that remain frozen.

City roads manager Brad Adams says the situation is unusual but not unprecedented.

Graders are being used first to try to scrape snow and ice from around catch-basins, but if that doesn't work the city assigns a team with a steaming unit to get the water flowing into the sewer.

Adams said he hopes to get all the work done this week before an expected temperature drop on the weekend allows puddles to freeze.
