City solicitor Rosalie Evans is taking a one-year sabbatical from her municipal job to focus on labour relations law.

Evans will spend 2012 working for Thunder Bay law firm Weiler Maloney Nelson.

Her temporary absence is effective Jan. 9, 2012, city manager Tim Commisso said Monday in a release issued by the city.

"At the City of Thunder Bay we are committed to being an employer of choice and supporting opportunities for staff to enhance their experience and skills," Commisso said in the release.

"In a complex field such as the law, that can include gaining external experience. We wish Ms. Evans well during this developmental opportunity and look forward to her return in early 2013."

An acting city solicitor is expected to be confirmed by council in the near future.
