THUNDER BAY -- The city budget is very nearly balanced after council's September adoption of a plan that cut $3.02-million from both operations and capital budgets.

Administration delivered the city's third quarterly variance report on Monday to reveal a $313,000 deficit.

Considering the $200,000 remaining from the projected year-end deficit of $3.2 million issued at the end of the second quarter, that constitutes a projected deficit of only $100,000 on a budget of $235 million.

“Administration on the executive team and the management team and indeed the people who work in the city of Thunder Bay are diligent. They are vigilant and we will remain so for the remainder of the year,” said city manager Norm Gale.

Operations manager Kerri Marshall said the slight overage was due to cost overruns at the landfill site.

When asked whether she was concerned about costs down the fourth quarter home stretch, Marshall expressed confidence in her department's budgeting.

“We take a look at our five year average and we do accumulate any funds leftover at the end of the year into a reserve for winter operations," she said.

"At this time, we’re not projecting any concerns with respect to this year.”
