THUNDER BAY — The city's Revenue Division is recommending that council agree to write off $333,000 in property taxes because they are uncollectible.

The taxes are owed on 10 properties which failed to sell in the city's 2019 tax sale.

The largest outstanding amount is $126,000 for a property at 1101 Frederica Street West.

A property at 235-237 Red River Road has $109,000 in taxes owing.

The Revenue Division recommends that these two sites, as well as properties at 61 South Court Street, 300 Finlayson Street and 1418 East Moodie Street, be declared surplus to municipal needs and advertised for sale immediately on an "as is" condition on the open market.

The five remaining properties, situated on Lynda Avenue, 2100 Baker Avenue, 4335 Willard Avenue, 811- 105th Street and 832 - 110th Street, would be retained by the city for future municipal purposes.

In the tax sale earlier this year, the city managed to recoup all the taxes owing on seven other properties, for a total of $77,000.

The minimum tender bid on properties offered in a tax sale is the balance owing on the account.
