THUNDER BAY – Talks have begun for a new collective agreement between the City of Thunder Bay and the union representing its transit workers.

Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) Local 966 president Fred Caputo said talks were in the preliminary stages, while the city confirmed bargaining dates had been set.

The collective agreement, which expired in June of 2020, covers maintenance staff as well as conventional and Lift+ transit operators.

Wages for operators start at $22.50 an hour under the agreement, jumping to $28.12 in the second year of employment. The agreement offered wage increases of 1.5 to 1.65 per cent a year.

Correction: An earlier version of this story stated that the collective agreement was discussed in closed session by city council on Monday. The issue was not discussed by council. TBNewswatch apologizes for the error.
