THUNDER BAY -- The city will waive tipping fees for the NorWest Community Health Centre but it wants the province to pay up.

In the midst of an $8.3 million expansion at its Simpson Street location, the centre unearthed unexpected debris that totaled nearly $29,000 in tipping fees at the city landfill. CEO Wendy Talbot said while the cost won't impact essential services, she would likely have to stop certain programming to make up the difference.

"It means I have to cut someone," she said.

City council approved the request to waive the tipping fees but it's sending a letter to the Ministry of Health and Longterm Care that it wants its money back.
