UPDATE: City woman tries to locate owner of 'the sweetest chicken ever'

The bird was found on the loose Tuesday in the Balsam Street/Margaret Street area.

THUNDER BAY — A lost chicken was making herself at home Tuesday afternoon while her temporary guardian tried to locate her owner.

"Oh my God, she's the sweetest chicken ever," Courtney Marie said from her north-side Thunder Bay home.

Marie's boss was driving in the Balsam Street/Margaret Street area earlier in the day when he spotted the bird on the loose.

When he stopped to help, it jumped into the cab, so he took it back to the office at Langen Glass.

"I used to live in the area the chicken was found 10 years ago, and I remember there was somebody in the neighbourhood that had chickens," Marie told TBnewswatch.

She went to the house but there was no one home, so she left a note on the door including her phone number: "Hey, if you own chickens and you're missing one, give me a call because I think I have it."

Marie went to some trouble to make sure the chicken is safe and secure, even going to a pet store to buy a small harness so it can't escape again.

"She's like a little dog. She comes to you when you call her. She just loves snuggling, and is the calmest, tamest chicken I've ever seen in my life."

Marie planned to wait for her phone to ring until early evening before taking another drive back to the neighbourhood to try to locate the owner.

UPDATE:   Marie did receive a call back from the person, who told her the chicken is not hers.  She said Wednesday morning she plans to keep the bird for a couple more days in case the owner reaches out to her.  If not, she's making arrangements to take the chicken to a small hobby farm.  In the meantime, the bird is being kept comfortable on some hay, and "seems to really enjoy exploring our yard."
