THUNDER BAY – City workers plan to hold a rally Monday in front of city hall, a little more than a week ahead of being in a legal strike position.

Members of the Canadian Union of Public Employees say the rally, scheduled to begin at 4:30 p.m., is designed to let the city know they mean business.

"Our members are sending a clear message to city council that we need a willing partner to get a fair deal," said Karen Martin, president of Local 87 in a release issued on Friday.

"It's been nearly two years since our contract expired. It's time to focus on negotiating a settlement."

About 700 city workers have set a strike deadline of 12:01 a.m. on Nov. 1.

The next mediated talks are scheduled for Oct. 31.
