THUNDER BAY – City workers represented by CUPE will meet Wednesday morning to discuss details of their new proposed contract.
The proposal came after discussions between CUPE Local 87, which represents an estimated 700 city workers, and the city went beyond the midnight deadline.
Unionized workers were in an official strike position after that deadline passed, however the city later revealed that the deadline had been pushed back to Monday, Nov. 7.
“The union is consulting with its membership and it is going to hold a vote on the city’s most recently tabled set of proposals,” said city manager Norm Gale in an emailed release issued just before 3 a.m. on Tuesday.
“There will be no strike until the vote has been held and the results of that vote are known.”
Members will vote on the new contract Friday at the CUPE office.
Details of the offer are not being made public.
On Monday, both the union and city were asked not to speak to media about the negotiations.
Wednesday's CUPE meeting is expected to take place at the Slovak Legion in the city’s East End.
NOE TO READER: An earlier version of this story incorrectly stated the union meeting would take place Thursday.
