THUNDER BAY – The City of Thunder Bay is removing nets at outdoor rinks, a move that has upset some in the hockey-playing community.

A change.org petition, started by John Falvo, has more than 75 signatures after being launched late on Wednesday.

“(Families) and kids need nets to use to get out and have fun and practice skills of the games,” Falvo said.

“Taking them away only encourages kids to stay home and not get exercise, which is vital for mental well-being. Very poor decision, City of Thunder Bay.”

The city, in a release, said the new rules came into effect on Thursday and, in addition to the nets being removed, no games will be allowed, sticks and pucks are allowed for individual and family use only and no more than 25 people will be allowed on a rink at any time.

“With so many activities cancelled due to Ontario’s current lockdown, we’ve seen a large increase in the use of outdoor rinks,” said Cory Halvorsen, manager of parks and open spaces. “These enhanced rules are in place so that rinks can operate in compliance with the restrictions, and to keep everyone safe as they enjoy outdoor skating.”

The city plans to monitor the rinks for compliance and is recommending that masks or face coverings be worn on all rinks and in other park areas during the lockdown, which is expected to last until at least Feb. 11.

The Thunder Bay District Health Unit tweeted the changes bring local outdoor rinks into compliance with provincial rules.

“The decision to remove nets at all outdoor rinks in the city was made to align with the Ontario Regulation that restricts team sports or other games where physical distancing can't be maintained from being played at all outdoor amenities.”
